The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (2008)

Wow, this band just screams "We're from New Jersey!" The Gaslight Anthem borrows influences from songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and (obviously) Bruce Springsteen and adds a 50s flair and a punk rock edge. The sound might seem unique, but I really wouldn't call it something special. However don't let that discourage you. The magic of The '59 Sound lies with the unbelievable catchiness of the songs. After only two or three listens, I could remember every single track on this album, especially songs such as "Great Expectations" and "The Patient Ferris Wheel." The Gaslight Anthem is certainly a band to watch out for, especially since their next album, American Slang, is set to be released on June 15.

Operation Ivy - Energy (1990)

"All I know is that I don't know, all I know is that I don't know nothing."

Operation Ivy is regarded as one of the most important bands of the third wave of ska. Despite their extremely short career, they have certainly made their name known in the music industry. Operation Ivy created a strong foundation for the ska punk sound that would be used by and built upon by numerous bands in the 90s. After the band broke up, guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman went on to form Rancid. Operation Ivy's only album Energy was released on vinyl as a 19 song album and rerelased on CD with the Hectic EP and other tracks as a bonus.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you can clearly see, I absolutely love the Waste. Here's their latest effort, Massive Aggressive. It's a bit slower and the lyrics are a bit more 'mature' (they stopped singing about zombies and beer), but it still kicks ass.

Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes Of God (2009)

I was pleasantly surprised with Goatwhore's new album. Naturally, I was expecting another A Haunting Curse, but this album has a heavier, thrashier feel to it. As far as lyrics go, it's still the same Goatwhore we've all come to love (or not). Overall, Carving Out The Eyes Of God is an improvement from Goatwhore's last album.

Harvestman - In a Dark Tongue (2009)

It should be known that there is no such thing as a bad Neurosis side project. Steve Von Till's work under the name Harvestman is strong evidence. In a Dark Tongue, Harvestman's sophomore effort, features a cross between Neurosis' brand of sludge and northwestern US folk metal.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye (2009)

You know how every year there's that one mainstream album that kicks ass? Well this year, that album is Crack the Skye. Brutal Truth - Evolution Through Revolution (2009)

Every year a bunch of old-school bands who haven't been active in ages release their "comeback" album, which usually ends up not being so great *coughmetallicacough*. This time, we have Brutal Truth's first full-length album in 12 years. Fortunately, this album is far from being called a piece of crap. On this day, anything goes, burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember Halloween

Unless you haven't looked at a calendar, you'd already know that today is the glorious day known as Halloween. In honor of this originally Pagan celebration, here's The Misfits. Not only are the 'Fits one of the greatest punk bands of all time, but they are also my favorite. Happy Halloween!

The Rough Cuts demo is also available for download on the band's Myspace page.

Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost (2007)

Skeletonwitch have made themselves one of the best heavy metal bands of the 21st century ever since the release of Beyond the Permafrost. Unlike many modern thrash bands, Skeletonwitch creates their own sound by mixing thrash, black metal, and blistering solos, as heard on the blackened shredfest that is the band's sophomore effort. If you haven't heard Skeletonwitch yet, then I suggest you hurry up and give this a spin.

Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed And The Way To Suck Eggs (1992)

Ministry is one of the most important industrial artist. Beginning with Psalm 69, Ministry also incorporates some metal into their work. The moods on this album range from aggressive ("Hero" and "TV II") to just plain creepy ("Scare Crow" and "Psalm 69"). Psalm 69 is also a very special album for me, considering that it was one of the first metal albums I owned.

1) N.W.O.
2) Just One Fix
3) TV II
4) Hero
5) Jesus Built My Hotrod

Fishbone - Fishbone EP (1985)

Fishbone is an essential band for anyone interested in ska. This all-black Californian band fuses third-wave ska with a brand of funky punk similar to Faith No More and early Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fishbone's self-titled EP, also their first recorded material ever, contains the ska classic "Party At Ground Zero," which is one of the band's most popular tracks. Another album recommended is Fishbone's 1988 album Truth and Soul, which features a calmer, yet still incredibly fun, version of the band.

1) Ugly
2) Another Generation
3) ? (Modern Industry)
4) Party At Ground Zero
5) Voyage Through The Land Of The Freeze Dried Godzilla Farts
6) Lyin' Ass Bitch
