The Ocean - Heliocentric (2010)

The Ocean takes a whole new musical direction on Heliocentric. This new album is much more diverse than the previous three albums. Heliocentric ranges from soft songs featuring piano to heavy sludge tracks. Although fluXion and the second disc of Precambrian have been described as atmospheric and symphonic, both are still rather abrasive and come nowhere close to the level that Heliocentric is on. The lyrics of this album revolve around a debate between science and religion, from the perspective of science. A follow-up album, Anthropocentric, which takes the religious point of view will be released later this year.

1) Shamayim
2) Firmament
3) The First Commandment of the Luminaries
4) Ptolemy Was Wrong
5) Metaphysics of the Hangman
6) Catharsis of a Heretic
7) Swallowed by the Earth
8) Epiphany
9) The Origin of Species
10) The Origin of God

Fen - The Malediction Fields (2009)

Fen's basically one of those proggy black metal bands that sound like Enslaved. Nothing really special but I'd put it in my favorite albums this year so far.

1) Exile's Journey
2) A Witness to the Passing of Aeons
3) Colossal Voids
4) As Buried Spirits Stir
5) The Warren
6) Lashed by the Storm
7) Bereft

Emancer - Twilight and Randomness (2008)

First of all, a late happy Thanksgiving to anyone who actually reads this. And now about the album:
Emancer's latest album sounds much like Enslaved's most recent albums. However, they still have their own style. Twilight and Randomness is definitely in one of my top albums of this year.

1) Randomness
2) Dice Man
3) The Beast Attacks
4) The Pointing Finger
5) Comfort Fix
6) Twilight
7) Cunning Vital Guardian
8) Moron
9) The Rewarding Schemes
10) Winged Omniscience

Orphaned Land - Sahara (1994)

Right now I'm feeling too lazy to write a fancy review for this album, so here: Orhphaned Land mixes death metal, progressive metal, and Middle Eastern folk music to create their unique sound. Aside from the traditional instruments used in heavy metal, Orphaned Land uses Arabic and Balkan stringed instruments such as the saz, the bouzouki, and the oud. Sahara is the band's first full-length release as well as my favorite album by them.

1) The Sahara's Storm
2) Blessed Be Thy Hate
3) Ornaments of Gold
4) Aldiar Al Mukadisa
5) Seasons Unite
6) The Beloved's Cry
7) My Requiem
8) Orphaned Land, The Storm Still Rages Inside

Ne Obliviscaris - The Aurora Veil (2007)

The Aurora Veil is a demo from Ne Obliviscaris that is filled with acoustic passages and clean vocals (as well as harsh). For black metal, the production has an unusually good quality. After listening to this demo, you can predict that their debut album will be great.

1) Tapestry of the Starless Abstract

2) Forget Not
3) As Icicles Fall
