Thou Shalt Suffer - Into the Woods of Belial (1997)

Thou Shalt Suffer was one of the many side projects of the Norwegian circle of second wave black metal bands. This project features Ihsahn, Samoth, and Ildjarn. Instead of the usual lo-fi black metal, Thou Shalt Suffer plays (or played I should say) a rather odd type of death metal, with extremely guttural vocals and effectively used keyboards. This compilation feature the original Into the Woods of Belial demo, the Open the Mysteries of Your Creation EP, and a rehearsal from 1991.

1) Into the Woods of Belial
2) I Seek the Path of Obscurity
3) Chimera Dimension
4) The Goat of a Thousand Young
5) Succumb to Vestigia Terrent

Behemoth - Evangelion (2009)

Behemoth are back with their 9th full-length album, Evangelion. This one is without a doubt a step up from Demigod and The Apostasy. They even debuted at 56 on the Billboard Top 200! Along with Crack the Skye, this is one of the best mainstream metal albums released this year.

1) Daimonos
2) Shemhamforash
3) Ov Fire and the Void
4) Transmigrating Beyond Realms ov Amenti
5) He Who Breeds Pestilence
6) The Seed ov I

Man Must Die - No Tolerance For Imperfection (2009)

What we have here is technical death metal, but not the kind with all the guitar neck wankery. True, there's still intricate guitarwork on No Tolerance For Imperfection, but what makes Man Must Die tech death is their complex rhythms. If you like death metal, this is a must-have album for this year.

1) No Tolerance For Imperfection
2) Gainsayer
3) Kill It Skin It Wear It
4) It Comes In Threes
5) This Day Is Back
6) Hide The Knives
7) Dead In The Water

Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes Of God (2009)

I was pleasantly surprised with Goatwhore's new album. Naturally, I was expecting another A Haunting Curse, but this album has a heavier, thrashier feel to it. As far as lyrics go, it's still the same Goatwhore we've all come to love (or not). Overall, Carving Out The Eyes Of God is an improvement from Goatwhore's last album.

2) The All-Destroying

Blasphemophager - Nuclear Empire of Apocalypse (2008)

Unsurprisingly, the Italians have given us another amazing extreme metal band. Raw, brutal, blackened death metal. Plus, the production isn't complete crap and isn't too polished. And did I mention the imagery is ridiculous?

Brutal Truth - Evolution Through Revolution (2009)

Every year a bunch of old-school bands who haven't been active in ages release their "comeback" album, which usually ends up not being so great *coughmetallicacough*. This time, we have Brutal Truth's first full-length album in 12 years. Fortunately, this album is far from being called a piece of crap. Evolution Through Revolution features the same fast, aggressive, politically-driven grindcore that made Brutal Truth famous in the 90s.

1) Sugardaddy
2) Turmoil
3) Daydreamer
4) On the Hunt
5) Fist in Mouth

Centaurus-A - Side Effects Expected (2009)

Centaurus-A is a new death metal band on Listenable Records. Their debut Side Effects Expected is one of my favorite albums released this year. Centaurus-A, just like every other tech death band, shows extreme influence from Necrophagist, especially in the solos. However, these guys bring something else to the table: their brand of tech death is infused with a healthy dosage of thrash.

1) The Praying Mantis
2) Narcotic
3) Drop Off
4) Morning Tremble
5) The Ease
6) Incident/Accident
7) Arson
8) Dripping Red Canvas
9) Selfmade Cage

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Oracles (2009)

Once again, the Italians prove their extraordinary skill when it comes to death metal. Fleshgod Apocalypse is a relatively new band, with Oracles as their debut album. These guys aren't exactly your normal brutal death metal band. There's classical interludes scattered throughout the album and the guitar work is undoubtedly influenced a great deal by classical music. It almost seems as if Fleshgod Apocalypse could be classified neoclassical death metal.

1) In Honour of Reason
2) Post-Enlightenment Executor
3) As Tyrants Fall
4) Sophistic Demise
5) Requiem in SI Minore
6) At The Guillotine
7) Embodied Deception

Auflader/Zero Burn

Once again, I'm posting material made by a friend of mine. My buddy Arafat lives in Bangladesh and is the vocalist for two bands: Auflader and Zero Burn. Auflader is a melodeath project, whereas Zero Burn is deathrash with a hint of groove. Both bands are totally awesome!

1) Deathlike Silence- Auflader
2) Reign- Zero Burn

Carnage - Dark Recollections (1990)

Carnage is a band some of you might already know as Michael Amott's first band. Carnage is one of the most influential bands that helped Sweden create it's own brand of death metal. Unfortunately, Dark Recollections is the only album by this band. After this album, guitarist Michael Amott joined soon-to-be death metal legends Carcass and vocalist Matti Kärki, guitarist David Blomqvist and drummer Fred Estby formed Dismember.

1) Dark Recollections
2) Torn Apart
3) Blasphemies of the Flesh

4) Infestation of Evil

5) Gentle Exhuming

6) Deranged From Blood

7) Malignant Epitaph

Legion of the Damned - Feel the Blade (2008)

Sorry for making you wait so long for another album. Now that I'm posting stuff again, I'll start with one of my favorite albums from this year so far, Legion of the Damned's Feel the Blade. Legion of the Damned, originally known as Occult, is a dutch deathrash band. The best thing about them is the fact they're fucking brutal. Feel the Blade is a reissue of the band's album Elegy for the Weak which was released when the band still went by the name Occult. However, the tracklisting on this album is different and there are also three bonus tracks: "Last Command," "Mask of Terror," and "Chronic Infection."

1) Nuclear Torment
2) Nocturnal Predator
3) Slaughtering the Pigs
4) Slut of Sodom
5) Feel the Blade
6) Expire
7) Warbeast
8) Disturbing the Dead

Orphaned Land - Sahara (1994)

Right now I'm feeling too lazy to write a fancy review for this album, so here: Orhphaned Land mixes death metal, progressive metal, and Middle Eastern folk music to create their unique sound. Aside from the traditional instruments used in heavy metal, Orphaned Land uses Arabic and Balkan stringed instruments such as the saz, the bouzouki, and the oud. Sahara is the band's first full-length release as well as my favorite album by them.

1) The Sahara's Storm
2) Blessed Be Thy Hate
3) Ornaments of Gold
4) Aldiar Al Mukadisa
5) Seasons Unite
6) The Beloved's Cry
7) My Requiem

Regurgitate - Carnivorous Erection (2008)

Holy shit. There's only word that can describe this album: disgusting. It's brutal and makes you want to headbang and maybe even destroy something. But at the same time, it's so fucking nasty that you stare in awe and start to wonder who the hell came up with this idea. With thirty eight tracks, all under two minutes, overly carnal lyrics and deep gurgly vocals, this something you either love or hate.

1) The Pulsating Feast
2) Domination Through Mutilation
3) Escortservice of the Dead
4) Obscene Body Slayings
5) Fecal Freak
6) Humiliated in Your Own Blood
7) Just Another Stillborn

Vidres a la Sang - Endins (2006)

So I finally got off my ass (not literally of course) and found an underground band for all you people that actually check this site. You like Belphegor and Dissection? Vidres a la Sang plays a type of blackened death metal similar to those bands. Also, this band sings in Spanish. At last, a metal band with Spanish lyrics that isn't even slightly cheesy!

1) Amb Tota Rancúnia
2) Els Límits de la Creació
3) Identitat
4) Negre Destí, Roja Venjança
5) Torna al teu Clos

Carcass - Nectroticism: Descanting With The Insalubrious (1991)

You might have heard already, but death metal legends Carcass have reunited and are touring. In celebration of the reunion, I'm posting one of the greatest death metal albums of all time Necroticism: Descanting With The Insalubrious. With tracks like Corporal Jigsore Quandary, Pedigree Butchery, and Incarnated Solvent Abuse, this album will be sure to leave you with even the slightest bit of whiplash.

Be sure to catch one of Carcass' shows on the Exhumed To Consume Tour while they're still around!

Melechesh - Sphynx (2003)

The only thing better than blackened death metal is blackened death metal with folk influences. Fortunately, Melechesh fits the description. Hailing from Israel, Melechesh includes elements of Middle Eastern folk music and lyrics about ancient Sumerian history and mythology. And even better: they're not cheesy like other bands that try to use the Middle Eastern gimmick (Nile anyone?).

1) Of Mercury and Mercury
2) Secrets of Sumerian Sphynxology
3) Annunaki's Golden Thrones
4) Apkallu Counsel
5) Tablets of Fate
6) Triangular Tattvic Fate

Vital Remains - Dechristianize (2003)

This is the second album of my American metal weekend:

Vital Remains is a side-project of Deicide's Glen Benton. However, for a side-project this is actually better than Deicide! Dechristianize can be described with three words: epic, melodic, brutal. And that goes for every song on the album.

1) Let the Killing Begin
2) Dechristianize
3) Infidel
4) Devoured Elysium
5) Savior to None...Failure for All...
6) Unleased Hell
7) Rush of Deliverance
8) At War With God
9) Entwined By Vengeance
