Happy Holidays!

Hope everyone had a good time over the holidays and has a good New Year. Maybe I won't be so lazy and post more albums next year. No, that's not a New Years resolution.

First of all, a late happy Thanksgiving to anyone who actually reads this. And now about the album:

The Misfits - Legacy of Brutality (1985)

Bonfires burning bright, pumpkin faces through the night
I remember Halloween
On this day, anything goes, burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember Halloween

Unless you haven't looked at a calendar, you'd already know that today is the glorious day known as Halloween. In honor of this originally Pagan celebration, here's The Misfits. Not only are the 'Fits one of the greatest punk bands of all time, but they are also my favorite. Happy Halloween!

Winterfylleth - Rising Of The Winter Full Moon (2007)

Imagine England before the Roman Empire. Now pair it up with black metal and you have Winterfylleth. Unlike most pagan black metal bands, Winterfylleth creates a Celtic sort of atmosphere rather than a Viking one. The production on this isn't exactly the greatest, but it wasn't recorded with a tape recorder and a coffee can.

Here we have one my favorite and one of the greatest black metal recordings ever. Harsh, brutal, and raw, Mayhem helped to define the second wave of black metal with the infamous Deathcrush.

Hollenthon - Domus Mundi (1999)

Hollenthon is tough to classify as one genre. The Metal Archives even gives them four genres! Combining melodeath, orchestras, and Middle Eastern and European folk music, the band has managed to create a truly unique sound.
Domus Mundi is the first of three albums released by Hollenthon.

1) Enrapture (Hinc Illae Lacrimæ)

2) Homage (Magni Nominis Umbra)
3) Vestige (Non Omnis Moriar)
4) Lure (Pallida Mors)

Setherial - Nord (1996)

Normally, I would praise a Swedish metal band for being insanely heavy death metal. However, Setherial is some of the best black metal I've ever heard. Sure they aren't the most original, but they certainly do an amazing job playing grim, icy, frostbitten, epic black metal.

1) In the Still of a Northern Full Moon

2) Mörkrets Tid

3) Över Det Blodtäckta Nord

4) I Nattens Famn

5) För Dem Mitt Blod

Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost (2007)

Skeletonwitch have made themselves one of the best heavy metal bands of the 21st century ever since the release of Beyond the Permafrost. Unlike many modern thrash bands, Skeletonwitch creates their own sound by mixing thrash, black metal, and blistering solos, as heard on the blackened shredfest that is the band's sophomore effort. If you haven't heard Skeletonwitch yet, then I suggest you hurry up and give this a spin.

1) Upon Wings of Black
2) Beyond the Permafrost
3) Baptized in Flames
4) Sacrifice for the Slaughtergod
5) Vengeance Will Be Mine
6) Limb From Limb
7) Cast into the Open Sea

Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed And The Way To Suck Eggs (1992)

Ministry is one of the most important industrial artist. Beginning with Psalm 69, Ministry also incorporates some metal into their work. The moods on this album range from aggressive ("Hero" and "TV II") to just plain creepy ("Scare Crow" and "Psalm 69"). Psalm 69 is also a very special album for me, considering that it was one of the first metal albums I owned.

1) N.W.O.
2) Just One Fix
3) TV II
4) Hero
5) Jesus Built My Hotrod

Kragens - Infight (2007)

After listening to Kragens, I can actually say that there's at least one French metal band I enjoy. Kragens of France plays a brand of power/thrash quite similar to that of Nevermore. However, Kragens vocalist Renaud Espeche (who sounds like a cross between Warrel Dane and Roy Khan) also employs the use of harsh vocals. Infight is the band's third full-length release. I really don't have much else to say, but listen, headbang, and enjoy!

1) Deaf and Blind
2) Lake of Fire
3) Angels Among Monsters
4) Tyranny of God

Carnage - Dark Recollections (1990)

Carnage is a band some of you might already know as Michael Amott's first band. Carnage is one of the most influential bands that helped Sweden create it's own brand of death metal. Unfortunately, Dark Recollections is the only album by this band. After this album, guitarist Michael Amott joined soon-to-be death metal legends Carcass and vocalist Matti Kärki, guitarist David Blomqvist and drummer Fred Estby formed Dismember.

1) Dark Recollections
2) Torn Apart
3) Blasphemies of the Flesh

4) Infestation of Evil

5) Gentle Exhuming

Fishbone - Fishbone EP (1985)

Fishbone is an essential band for anyone interested in ska. This all-black Californian band fuses third-wave ska with a brand of funky punk similar to Faith No More and early Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fishbone's self-titled EP, also their first recorded material ever, contains the ska classic "Party At Ground Zero," which is one of the band's most popular tracks. Another album recommended is Fishbone's 1988 album Truth and Soul, which features a calmer, yet still incredibly fun, version of the band.

1) Ugly

Al-Namrood - Atba'a Al-Namrood (2008)

A black metal band is one of the last thing anyone would expect to come out of Saudi Arabia, one of the holiest places in the world. Al-Namrood describes themselves as "a blend of a fiendish Black Metal and an Archaic Arabian culture." Although the Middle Eastern theme is becoming more and more cliched in metal, the band manages to create a wonderful sound reminiscent to that of the second wave of black metal. The name Al-Namrood ("the non-believer" in English) is the name of the Babylonian king mentioned in the Qur'an who challenged the prophet Ibrahim and claimed to be God.

Legion of the Damned - Feel the Blade (2008)

Sorry for making you wait so long for another album. Now that I'm posting stuff again, I'll start with one of my favorite albums from this year so far, Legion of the Damned's Feel the Blade. Legion of the Damned, originally known as Occult, is a dutch deathrash band. The best thing about them is the fact they're fucking brutal. Feel the Blade is a reissue of the band's album Elegy for the Weak which was released when the band still went by the name Occult. However, the tracklisting on this album is different and there are also three bonus tracks: "Last Command," "Mask of Terror," and "Chronic Infection."

1) Nuclear Torment
2) Nocturnal Predator
3) Slaughtering the Pigs
4) Slut of Sodom

Orphaned Land - Sahara (1994)

Right now I'm feeling too lazy to write a fancy review for this album, so here: Orhphaned Land mixes death metal, progressive metal, and Middle Eastern folk music to create their unique sound. Aside from the traditional instruments used in heavy metal, Orphaned Land uses Arabic and Balkan stringed instruments such as the saz, the bouzouki, and the oud. Sahara is the band's first full-length release as well as my favorite album by them.

1) The Sahara's Storm
2) Blessed Be Thy Hate
3) Ornaments of Gold
4) Aldiar Al Mukadisa

Arsis - A Diamond For Disease (2005)

Let's make a deal, a diamond for disease...

Recently the word "epic" has been used so much that it has lost its meaning. However, A Diamond For Disease truly deserves to be called epic. Running thirteen minutes long, this is the most excellent song that singer and guitarist James Malone has written. The track fades in from ambiance and into an unforgettable melody. After a full assault of complex riffs, effectively placed breakdowns and two solos, the songs ends with a tune reminiscent of the one the song began with. This EP of the same title also contains an Alice Cooper cover ("Roses On White Lace") and another original song ("The Promise Of Never").

Death Mechanism - Human Error...Global Terror (2008)

Seriously, what is it about Italians that makes them so awesome when it comes to extreme metal? Out of all the countries in the world, Italy has some of the best thrashers right after Germany and the United States. Death Mechanism is the epitome of retro thrash. After 25 seconds of heartbeats, the opening riffs of "Anthropic Collapse" tell you that this band is heavily the German "Big 3" (Kreator, Destruction, and Sodom). Then come the lyrics, which are typical thrash lyrics about death, war, destruction, politics, etc. Hell, the band was formerly known as O.D.O. which stands for Odio, Distruzione, Orrore meaning "Hate, Destruction, Horror" in Italian. Finally, the promo picture featuring all three members in black band t-shirts, denim vests and bullet belts. Despite this obvious worship of the old-school, Death Mechanism manages to be one of my favorite thrash bands of the new century and Human Error...Global Terror one of my favorite albums of the year so far. Is this album creative and original? Nope. Is this album great headbanging material? Fuck yeah!

No More Albums From SPV, InsideOut, and Wacken Records

I received an e-mail today from some guy at SPV:

Regurgitate - Carnivorous Erection (2008)

Holy shit. There's only word that can describe this album: disgusting. It's brutal and makes you want to headbang and maybe even destroy something. But at the same time, it's so fucking nasty that you stare in awe and start to wonder who the hell came up with this idea. With thirty eight tracks, all under two minutes, overly carnal lyrics and deep gurgly vocals, this something you either love or hate.

Arkona- Ot Serdtsa K Nebu (2007)

Looking for something similar to Finntroll? Well here it is. Arkona has a sound similar to the many Scandinavian folk metal bands, but they manage to distinguish themselves from the rest of the crowd. However, just like your average folk metal band, Arkona sings about folktales and mythology from their own country. And if that's not enough, they sing in Russian. Want to know what the song titles mean? Too bad. I don't speak Russian.

Slayer - Decade of Aggression (1991)

Fuckin' Slayer! Finally an album by my favorite band. Decade of Aggression is probably my favorite live album. The first disc contains a basic Slayer setlist which would include some of their most famous songs such as "Angel of Death," "South of Heaven," and "Raining Blood." The second disc focuses more on album tracks but is the more intense of the two with songs like "Black Magic," "Spirit in Black," and "Postmortem." Although this album gives you a good idea of what a Slayer show would be like, you would actually have to go to one of their concerts to truly experience the chaos.

Disc 1:
1) Hell Awaits
2) The Anti-Christ
3) War Ensemble
4) South of Heaven
5) Raining Blood
6) Altar of Sacrifice
7) Jesus Saves
8) Dead Skin Mask
9) Seasons in the Abyss
10) Mandatory Suicide
11) Angel of Death

Disc 2:
1) Hallowed Point
2) Blood Red
3) Die By The Sword
4) Black Magic
5) Captor of Sin
6) Born of Fire
7) Postmortem
8) Spirit in Black

Bathory - Blood Fire Death (1988)

I've had this album for a while now and I never though much of it. However, I gave Blood Fire Death a listen a few days ago and I wanted to slap myself in the face for not realizing that this is among the best black metal albums ever! For a black metal album, the guitar work is mind blowing. High-speed shredding is one of the last things I'd expect from the album that started the viking metal movement. Hell, Blood Fire Death has more in common with thrash than black metal! If you aren't a fan of black metal, but you do like excellent guitar work that can be found in thrash and death metal, then I would recommend that you check out this album.

1) Oden's Ride Over Nordland
2) A Fine Day To Die

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994)

Although they are a progressive metal band now, Amorphis was once a melodic death metal band (featuring keyboards of course). And like every good band, they fuse elements of other genres into their music. In this case it's folk and doom metal. The title Tales From The Thousand Lakes is very appropriate considering that the lyrics on this album are based off of the Kalevala, a collection of Finnish folklore compiled by Elias Lönnrot and one of the most important pieces of Finnish literature. Take all of that stuff, put it all together, and you have a truly amazing album.

Fun Fact: Amorphis was the first band added to the Metal Archives.
...What's so fun about a fun fact?

1) Thousand Lakes
2) Into Hiding
3) The Castaway
4) First Doom
5) Black Winter Day
6) Drowned Maid
7) In the Beginning

Bleeding Through - The Truth (2006)

Yep, another album I normally wouldn't post here. However, Bleeding Through is one of the few metalcore bands I still enjoy. Maybe the reason I still like them is because I saw them opening for Slayer, and in my opinion they did a great job. Honestly, I'm actually excited to hear their new album Declaration which will be released on September 30th.

1) For Love and Failing
2) Confession
3) Love in Slow Motion
4) The Painkiller
5) Kill to Believe
6) Dearly Demented
7) Line in the Sand
8) She's Gone
9) Tragedy of Empty Streets
10) Return to Sender
11) Hollywood Prison
12) The Truth (Instrumental)

Melechesh - Sphynx (2003)

The only thing better than blackened death metal is blackened death metal with folk influences. Fortunately, Melechesh fits the description. Hailing from Israel, Melechesh includes elements of Middle Eastern folk music and lyrics about ancient Sumerian history and mythology. And even better: they're not cheesy like other bands that try to use the Middle Eastern gimmick (Nile anyone?).

1) Of Mercury and Mercury
2) Secrets of Sumerian Sphynxology
3) Annunaki's Golden Thrones
4) Apkallu Counsel
5) Tablets of Fate
6) Triangular Tattvic Fate
7) The Arrival Ritual
8) Incendium Between Mirage and Time
9) Purifier of the Stars
10) Caravans to Ur

Falkenbach - Heralding-The Fireblade (2005)

This past week, I'd been listening to a lot of folk metal. I realized that this blog severely lacks any form of folk metal, so I decided to start posting some folk metal.

Falkenbach is a one-man band from Germany led by Markus Tuemmers aka Vratyas Vakyas. Vakyas' fourth full-length album is everything a blackish folk metal album should be. The songs are epic and harsh yet melodic.

1) Heathen Foray

2) Of Forest Unknown

3) Havamal
4) Roman Land

5) Heralder

6) Læknishendr

7) Walkiesjar

8) Skirnir

"I told you not to play keyboards for him."

I've been busy with work so I haven't posted anything in a while. Anyway, I'll put an up album or two soon. In the meantime, enjoy this video. Any person who was a fan of Cryptopsy's albums before The Unspoken King will understand.

Nuclear Assault - Game Over (1986)

This is the third and final album of my American metal weekend...god, I just realized how cheesy this idea was. Whatever:

Nuclear Assault's Game Over is one of my favorite thrash albums. Danny Lilker, who plays bass on this album (as well as in many other bands), is also one of my favorite bassists. If you grew up anywhere in the Northeastern United States, mainly New York or New Jersey, then you should hear a familiar tune halfway through the album.

1) Live, Suffer, Die
2) Sin
3) Cold Steel
4) Betrayal
5) Radiation Sickness
6) Hang the Pope
7) After the Holocaust
8) Mr. Softee Theme
9) Stranded in Hell
10) Nuclear War
11) My America
12) Vengeance
13) Brain Death

Vital Remains - Dechristianize (2003)

This is the second album of my American metal weekend:

Vital Remains is a side-project of Deicide's Glen Benton. However, for a side-project this is actually better than Deicide! Dechristianize can be described with three words: epic, melodic, brutal. And that goes for every song on the album.

1) Let the Killing Begin
2) Dechristianize
3) Infidel
4) Devoured Elysium
5) Savior to None...Failure for All...
6) Unleased Hell
7) Rush of Deliverance
8) At War With God
9) Entwined By Vengeance

Necros Christos - Triune Impurity Rites (2007)

Only about half the tracks on Triune Impurity Rites are actually songs. These songs have a heavy doom-ish blackened death sound to them. The rest of the tracks are short interludes that are used to create a dark atmosphere and add a melodic touch to the album. These interludes range from acoustic passages, spoken word, and ambient tracks.

1) Nekros Kristos (Temple IX.99)

2) Daemonomantic Fog Lay Upon The Tombs Of Succoth
3) Kischuf (Temple VIII)

Grave - Into The Grave (1991)

Grave's debut is an essential album for anyone interested in any form of death metal. The album starts off extremely heavy and, although it slows down a bit sometimes, the songs remain on the same level of intensity.

3) For Your God

4) Obscure Infinity

5) Hating Life

6) Into the Grave

Evoken - Antithesis of Light (2005)

Antithesis of Light is possibly one of the best doom metal albums ever. With no songs under 10 minutes (except the intro track), this crushing album is one of the darkest I have listened to.

1) Intro
2) In Solitary Ruin
3) Accursed Premonition
4) The Mournful Refusal
5) Pavor Nocturnus
6) Antithesis of Light
7) The Last of Vitality

Purgatory - Psychotic Dreams (1985)

Before Jon Schaffer decided to change the name of his legendary metal band, Iced Earth was known as Purgatory. The songs on this demo sound similar to songs on the band's self-titled debut album as Iced Earth.

1) Jack

2) In Jason's Mind

Katatonia - Brave Murder Day (1996)

Like other gothic metal bands from Sweden, such as Tiamat and Therion, Katatonia was once a death metal band. On Brave Murder Day, you can hear Katatonia's transition from doom/death to a more gothic sound. This album also features Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth on vocals.

1) Brave
2) Murder
3) Day
4) Rainroom

Final Breath - Mind Explosion (2002)

Deathrash usually implies that a band's style is a mix of thrash metal and pure straight-up death metal. Final Breath on the other hand adds a bit of melody to the mix. Despite this change to the norm, the band still manages to be brutal yet melodic.

1) Under Pressure
2) Mind Explosion
3) Killed By Lust
4) Break Down
5) Nondescript
6) White Prison
7) When Love Turns To Hate
8) The Punisher
9) To Live and To Die
10) Careless

Ne Obliviscaris - The Aurora Veil (2007)

The Aurora Veil is a demo from Ne Obliviscaris that is filled with acoustic passages and clean vocals (as well as harsh). For black metal, the production has an unusually good quality. After listening to this demo, you can predict that their debut album will be great.

1) Tapestry of the Starless Abstract

2) Forget Not
3) As Icicles Fall
